Using a Security Camera to Monitor Your Home

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Using a security camera to monitor your home is an easy, inexpensive way to give you some piece of mind when you are away. If done correctly you can view the video over the internet and ensure that even when you are not there you will still be able to lend assistance by calling for help should it be necessary.

Many things can go wrong when you leave your home and this is especially true if you have pets or kids that you leave home alone or with a caretaker. For just a small investment on your part you can install a security camera and monitor your home from anywhere you can get internet access be it your laptop, a smart phone or some other internet capable device.

One of the absolute easiest ways to view video over the internet is by using an IP Camera which is simply a camera that plugs directly into your computer, DVR or network device. You just plug it in and point it in the direction you want to be able to view and install the software for the camera. With the software installed it will allow you to access the video from your camera through a web browser over the internet.

IP Cameras are generally inexpensive and the total installation time is just a few minutes. You can get both wired and wireless versions so it gives you some flexibility on where and how you will be able to install your cameras. With one computer you can record and view the video from up to 16 IP Cameras total.

Another good option is the USB DVR which is a small device that plugs directly into the USB port on your computer. It comes with software you must install that will allow you to record the video from up to 4 cameras and view the video from the cameras over the internet using your computer’s internet connection.

Using the USB DVR allows you flexibility on the type of cameras you can use as well as where you can place them. This is all due to the ability to use either wired or wireless cameras. You also have the option of using a combination of both types of cameras together since you can have up to four different cameras at one time.

With either option you will simply go to the web address provided during the software installation process and you will be able to monitor your home from anywhere in the world that you can get internet access.
